Sailor From County Missing In Crash
Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Ronald H. Curtiss, 27, of 527 Topaz Drive, Bellefontaine Neighbors, is missing and presumed dead in the crash of a Navy plane in the Pacific Ocean near Guam Monday. The plane was carrying several Interior Department and Navy officials.
The victim's stepfather, Royce Nobles, said today that Curtiss' wife, Janice, and his two children, Ronald Jr., 7, and Robin Joy, 5, are living on Guam, where Mrs. Curtiss teaches elementary school. Curtiss was an aviation electrician and had been in the Navy eight years. He graduated from Riverview High School.
The twin-engine plane carrying 30 persons, including Undersecretary of the Interior James A. Joseph and Adm. David S. Cruden, commander of naval forces in the Mariana Islands, went down 16 miles west of Guam on a flight to the Yap islands. Joseph, Cruden and 26 others survived and were picked up by rescue craft. Curtiss and another Navy man are missing.
Guam is a U.S. territory about 4,000 miles west of Hawaii.
