I don’t think I had seen Tom since our 10-Year Reunion in 1979, but I went to the visitation and walked in during the Memorial Service, just in time to hear his sons and ex-wife speak. From the brief time I was there, I can tell you that Tom was a man who was loved and who loved to have a good time. His sons’ eulogy below says loads about their affection for him. Many, many of his friends were there. The thing that struck me most was when Tom’s ex-wife told us that Tom was the kindest man she has ever known. I remember him as a very friendly and pleasant guy. Cheers, Tom!
tribute by Jane ByersFollowing is the eulogy give by Tom's sons, Chris and Jeff Yates, at Tom's Memorial Service on January 31, 2015: Thomas Ray Yates. STOP! What is the first thing that comes to your mind when I say that name? Is it his huge smile that would light up a room? Is it his laugh that was louder than the juke box? Is it him telling a story you knew was embellished, but you listened because he told it so well? Or--was it him greeting you with a huge smile as soon as you walk through the door, and before he even says hi, he buys you a drink. He is the guy that would not hesitate to stay a bit longer if you had somethingto get off shoulders. Whether it was with a smile, a back-handed comment, a drink or some straight-from-the- heart advice, he could always find the time for a person in need. Words like respect, family, loyalty and toughness were earned where we come from. We are thankful that we have been allowed the privilege to be FROM and A PART of a family like all those we have encountered in the past and within the last few days. All that is left to say is…probably a “cheers” that we will be saying for years to come. We may not have chosen your path but something in our hearts tells us that your plan for us is working out perfectly! Thank you Dad for being you, the dreamy eyes and the unforgettable gift of gab. We love you and will always remember the happiness in your eyes.
tribute by Jane ByersTom and I played baseball together and to this day, I have the 8x10 photo in an album. He was such an avid player and at those ages, all of us were. He shall forever be missed, his genuine smile.
tribute by Doug AllenI fell for Tom the first day I met him in junior high. He remained in my heart all through the years. Our tenth reunion was a grand reunion for us both. Tom could be one of the sweetest, most loving individuals I know. He had a big heart and a beautiful smile.
